via tw @morris German movie 'The Wave', tells the story of a high school teacher who demonstrates to his students how a dictatorship can be formed through a social experiment, involving uniform clothing and symbols, collective titles and greetings, emphasis on discipline and order, exclusion of others, secrecy and exclusivity, common activities and goals, and the use of media and propaganda. The experiment eventually spirals out of control, leading to severe consequences and revealing the dangers and destructive power of a dictatorial regime.

Via Twitter @yangpigui 2019 Norwegian/German documentary 'War of Art', directed by Tommy Gulliksen. Seven artists from different countries visit North Korea for an art exchange. Amid expected censorship, 'escorts', and political spectacles, the details of conversations between the artists, their escorts, North Korean art workers, and ordinary people they meet are quite interesting. The 'report performance' at the time of departure is hilariously poignant. Of course, the editing is also an eye-opener.

In 2015, North Korea celebrated the 70th anniversary of its liberation by inviting the infamous Slovenian fascist band Laibach to perform in Pyongyang. The event was filled with censorship and compromise, institutional and aesthetic conflicts, making it a fascinating spectacle. This is a case where reality is indeed stranger than fiction.

This story circulated online and was initially made into a documentary in 2008, which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary. In 2009, it was remade and nominated for the Best Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. The film lacks a grand narrative or heroic oaths, maintaining a tone of solemnity, dignity, and emotion throughout. Without overt sentimentality, every ceremonial aspect commands respect. Life’s passing is quickly forgotten, yet it never truly disappears, especially for these genuine soldiers who embraced their role in life, an exemplary soldier. As if still alive as long as there is movement! Quietly experiencing this film allows one to genuinely appreciate the reverence for life, the human touch, during its 70-minute runtime.
